Golf cart brakes squeal or will not hold: causes, checks, and what each fix costs

Check this first (ten minutes)

Roll test. On flat ground, key off, push the cart. It should roll freely. Resistance means a shoe is dragging, and a dragging shoe both squeals and eats range.
Pedal feel. A pedal that travels most of the way before anything happens is out of adjustment or the shoes are gone. A pedal that is rock hard with no stopping power has a seized cable.
Parking brake hold. Set it on your driveway slope. If the cart moves at all, stop using it on any incline until it is fixed.
Listen for the location. Squeal from one side is one drum; squeal from both is wear; a grinding sound is metal on metal and the drum is being damaged every time you stop.
Look at the cables. Green corrosion under the sheath, fraying, or a cable that does not return when the pedal releases.

Why New Smyrna Beach carts wear brakes the way they do

Salt seizes cables. New Smyrna Beach sits on the Indian River Lagoon system, with the Atlantic along the barrier island and Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River along the mainland. Humidity seizes what sits, even inland. Daytona Beach International Airport’s climate normals put more than half the year’s rainfall into June through September. Brakes are equipment, not an accessory

On a designated public street, F.S. 316.212(6) requires a golf cart to have efficient brakes, reliable steering, safe tires, a rearview mirror, and red reflectors front and rear, though we have not found a New Smyrna Beach or Edgewater street that has actually been designated.
