There is no off-season. Carts inside Venetian Bay and around the beachside neighborhoods run errands, golf, and beach trips in January the same as June. Brake shoes and tires wear on cycles, and a cart that does 365 days of short trips racks up car-like mileage on parts designed for a golf course.

Heat and humidity do the rest. Daytona Beach International Airport’s climate normals, the closest full weather station to this coast, put annual rainfall at roughly 51.25 inches, with more than half of it falling June through September. That keeps drums and cables damp for a good part of the year even before salt gets involved, and inland at Samsula or Osteen, where the salt exposure is lower, humidity alone still does meaningful damage. Brake work, explained

Most golf carts run mechanical drum brakes on the rear wheels, cable-actuated from the pedal, with a parking brake that locks the pedal down. Three levels of work cover almost every cart:

What we check first. Pedal travel, whether the cart rolls on an incline with the parking brake set, whether it pulls to one side, and what is inside the drums. A seized cam or a stretched cable each produce the “brakes are gone” complaint for a fraction of the overhaul price. Tires: what wears, what to buy

Golf cart tires fail three ways here. Dry rot from sun and heat, accelerated on a cart parked outside in the same UV that bleaches Flagler Avenue awnings. Cupping and feathering from misalignment or a worn kingpin, which shows as a rhythmic thump. Turf tires stay softer and lower pressure, the right pick for a cart that spends time on grass around a community course like Venetian Bay’s. Street tires wear longer on pavement and hold pressure better, the better choice for a cart that mostly runs the beachside streets. All-terrain for lifted carts cost more and wear faster on asphalt. Tire pressure alone is worth a mention. Under-inflated tires drag, and drag looks exactly like a tired battery pack. Part of every tune-up is a pressure check, and it is the cheapest range fix there is.

Brakes and tires are a safety item, not a maintenance item

Florida treats them that way. F.S. 316.212(6) requires “efficient brakes, reliable steering apparatus, safe tires, a rearview mirror, and red reflectorized warning devices” on any golf cart operated on a designated street, though we could not find a New Smyrna Beach or Edgewater street that has actually been designated. F.S. 316.2122(1)(b) requires parking brakes on a low-speed vehicle, and an LSV built to run 25 mph with a corroded parking brake is not equipment failure, it is a defect on a titled motor vehicle.
